Parents' Questions, Answered

Quick answers about the school, how we teach and assess under CBE, and how to join us. If your question is not here, send us a message.

The School

When was Young Masters Academy founded?

Young Masters Academy was founded in 2005 in Likoni, Mombasa, so in 2026 the school is 21 years old. We have taught through the move from 8-4-4 to the Competency Based Curriculum and now to Competency Based Education (CBE).

Which levels do you offer?

We offer Daycare and ECD, Pre-Primary (PP1 and PP2), Lower Primary (Grades 1 to 3), Upper Primary (Grades 4 to 6), and Junior School (Grades 7 to 9). You can read about each level on the Academics page.

Is Young Masters Academy a private school?

Yes. We are a private school, and we serve a wide community, including children who are supported through the KE358 Child Development Centre (CDC).

Where exactly are you located?

We are on the compound of Deliverance Church International Likoni, in the Kitaruni area along Likoni-Ukunda Road, Likoni, Mombasa. The map on our contact page is zoomed in on the church so you can find us easily.

How is the school connected to KE358 and Deliverance Church International Likoni?

The school, Deliverance Church International Likoni, and the KE358 Child Development Centre (CDC) share one compound and work side by side as one community. A sizeable share of our learners are supported through KE358, and this partnership is how we serve the children among us who need it most.

Who leads the school?

The school is led by Rev. Mary Wambogo, a pastor, businesswoman, and the founder of the school; Anne Matthews, a Christian social worker; Moses Kioko (Musa Asubuhi), a serial entrepreneur; and James Kimani, a banker who is passionate about education. Meet the leadership team.

Do you offer Daycare?

Yes. Our Daycare and ECD programme gives our youngest children a safe, structured, and stimulating start.

Does the school provide transport?

No. Young Masters Academy does not currently provide school transport, so families arrange how their children travel to and from school.

Learning and CBE

What is Competency Based Education (CBE), and how does YMA use it?

CBE asks ‘What can my child do?’ rather than only ‘What does my child know?’ Learners are assessed over time through tasks, projects, observation, and tests, and their progress is recorded against competencies. We teach and assess in line with national policy. Read more on our Academics page.

What does government policy say about CBE?

Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2019 commits government to “mainstream competency based education and training” and to “reform the assessment and examinations framework” (read the paper). KICD’s Basic Education Curriculum Framework names seven core competencies and calls formative, criterion-referenced assessment “the bedrock of a competency-based curriculum” (read the framework).

Do school assessments count towards national results?

Yes. As reported in 2026, school-based assessment makes up about 60% of KPSEA (Grades 4 to 6) and 20% of KJSEA (Grades 7 and 8). Schools upload these scores to KNEC’s CBA portal (read the report). That is why steady, honest records of each learner’s work through the year matter.

Which clubs and activities do you offer?

Sports and athletics, arts, a chess club, a baking and entrepreneurship club, debate, and spelling bee. Each is linked to the core competencies in national policy on the Academics page.

Which subjects are taught in Junior School?

Subject specialist teachers deliver the Junior School programme (Grades 7 to 9), including Pre-Technical Studies, Business Studies, and Agriculture alongside core subjects.

Which languages do you teach?

English and Kiswahili form part of our programme from Pre-Primary, where learners are introduced to early literacy in both.

How big are your classes?

Our classes are intentionally small, so that teachers can know each learner by name, by strength, and by what they are still working on.

Admissions and Transfers

Is the 2027 intake open?

Yes. Applications for the January 2027 intake are open for all levels from Daycare to Grade 9. See how to apply.

When can my child join the school?

Our main intake runs in January, at the start of the academic year. A child can also transfer to us at any time, as long as the parent follows the government’s transfer protocols.

How do I apply?

Complete the online application through our admissions portal, or contact the school office by phone, WhatsApp, or the contact form. We acknowledge applications within two working days.

Which documents do I need?

A certified copy of the birth certificate, two recent passport-size photographs, the completed enrolment form, previous school reports or progress records (Grade 1 and above), and a copy of the parent or guardian’s national ID. Transfers also need a release letter from the previous school, plus your child’s UPI and KNEC assessment number.

Is there an assessment before admission?

For Grade 1 and above we carry out a brief, informal placement assessment. It is not a test your child needs to prepare for; it helps us understand how to support them from day one.

How do I transfer my child from another school?

Collect your child’s UPI, KNEC assessment number, and records; ask the current school for a release letter; and apply to us. We then start the transfer on KNEC’s CBA portal, the releasing school accepts it, an admission letter is generated online, and we notify the Sub-County Director of Education. See the full steps.

Can my child transfer into Grade 6?

Under the KNEC guidance reported in 2026, transfers are not allowed into Grade 6, because learners are preparing for the national assessment. Please speak to us before you withdraw your child from their current school.

What are the fees?

We share our fee structure directly with enquiring families. Please call or WhatsApp us on +254 798 639546, or send a message through the contact page.
